5th day stage: Stockerau to Kirchberg am Wagram

29.7 km – from Stockerau to Kirchberg am Wagram

If you chose to walk the entire length of the Way of St. James in the Weinviertel region, the fifth day stage takes you from Stockerau to Kirchberg am Wagram. On the 29.7 km stretch, you experience a transformation in landscape - the landscape characterised by vastness and gentle hills gives way to the landscape of the Wagram region.

Stockerau, the largest city in the Weinviertel region, is the starting point of the penultimate stage. The nearby Stockerau floodplain forest provides a positive recreation centre for nature lovers and its city parish church captivates with the highest church steeple in Lower Austria (88m).

Enjoy the landscape of the Wagram region

From Stockerau, you continue on your pilgrimage in the direction of Unterzögersdorf, Oberzögersdorf, Goldgeben and Hausleiten. In this area, the hilly landscape of the Weinviertel region gently gives way to that of the Wagram region. If you let your eyes wander, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the plant and animal life of the Waldviertel region. From Hausleiten, you take the Stirbweg tunnel underneath the Hausleiten parsonage to Gaisruck. Lined with vineyards and surrounded by vines, the Way of St. James follows the Wagram cycle route from Eggendorf. Thus, an enchanting scenery accompanies you on your way to Stetteldorf am Wagram, where the Way of St. James in the Weinviertel region continues through the cellar alley. On the way to Absdorf, you will find a resting place which is perfectly suited for taking a brief relaxing break. After taking a turn at the Faltinger cross, the Way of St. James in the Weinviertel region turns into an idyllic dirt track leading you to the edge of the Wagram ridge. The observation platform Wagramblick (Wagram view) offers the chance to enjoy an impressive panorama and a lovingly designed rest stop at the end of the Absberg cellar alley with a drinking water fountain provides an opportunity to refill water bottles and recharge one's batteries.

Pilgrimage to Kirchberg am Wagram

After leaving Absberg, follow the course of the Way of St. James in the Weinviertel region to Königsbrunn. Continue along the cellar alley up to the Wagram ridge and along the educational trail on wine growing. The vastness of the Tullnerfeld plains and the view of Mount Schneeberg and the Ötscher mountain range are fascinating companions on the path. After Unterstockstall and the original chapel Maria Trost following shortly thereafter, you will reach the town of Kirchberg am Wagram - and its edible landscape. A garden for people with a sweet tooth and a rest stop invite one to linger, various nut and fruit bearing plants offer something for every taste.

Arriving in Kirchberg am Wagram, you will have your last overnight stay before taking on the sixth day stage on the following day, during which the way will lead you to Krems an der Donau and the finish of the Way of St. James in the Weinviertel region.
